Kane couldn't see her that well—just the glitter of her eyes, the white flash of her teeth when she smiled. But he could smell her.

The subtle fragrance of her body drifted to him on the gentle breeze, flooding his senses. It woke a hunger inside him that was just too much, on the point of shattering his control. His skin felt tight and hot, too damned small for the need that raged inside him, and the longer he stared at her, the more intense it got.

His cock ached and his palms itched to hold her, to pull her against him and touch all those soft curves. Damn it, he wanted her.

And he couldn't have her.

There was little in life that was as frustrating as wanting something that he just couldn't have.

Jamming his hands into his pockets, he closed them into fists. The urge to reach out and touch her was almost unbearable. Focusing on her words, he said, in a tight voice, "You don't have a problem with your lover going home with another woman?"

"My lover," she repeated. Her voice had an odd, flat tone to it, and then she started to laugh. As that rich, husky sound echoed in the night, Kane narrowed his eyes, watching her.

The longer she laughed, the more irritated he got. Kane had to resist yet another urge—strangle her, spank her—something to make her stop laughing while he tried to figure out what in the hell was so amusing.

Kiss her.

He wanted to haul that sleek, powerful little body against his and cover that smart-ass mouth with his, plunging his tongue into its satin depths, and gorge on her.

She'd taste sweet. He knew it. And addictive… just the scent of her body was intoxicating. The taste would be so much more. Dangerous… dangerous… Kendall was the sort of woman that got inside a man's soul and never left. He didn't need to have her more deeply imbedded in his being than she already was.

Finally, her laughter started to fade and she studied him closely. Those eyes saw entirely too much, he suspected. "Go home, Kane."

With a slight smile, he replied, "I don't really have one, babe. You ought to understand that."

She took a step closer to him, letting him see her face a little better. There was a sadness in her eyes, and she sighed, shaking her head. "Maybe I do. What I don't understand is why you're doing this. You chose it. It chose me—I have no choice."

"Maybe I don't either," he murmured. "I may not be able to control people's thoughts and I'm not as strong as five men combined, but I hunt. It's what I'm good at. It's what I've always been good at."

"Then go back to doing what you used to do.. Not this, Kane. Not our life."

He smiled a little. "I can't."

Her eyes narrowed, and he felt a chill run through the air. The once muggy, heavy air suddenly felt frigid. "You need to, Kane."

"Stop it, Kendall. Your tricks aren't going to work on me.
